What’s the color of your car’s exhaust? Has it ever changed color? A change in color in your car exhaust can pretty much help you diagnose your vehicle. There might already be something brewing in there that could cause your car to fail or break down in the middle of the road. Being able to diagnose it early through the clues from your car exhaust will help make sure that the problem doesn’t get worse and gets immediately dealt with. Here are some exhaust colors that you should watch out for:
Blue
A bluish exhaust is something that you rarely see. This kind of exhaust could mean that there is an oil leak. The oil leaks to the combustion chamber and is burned with the fuel so it produces a bluish exhaust due to the chemicals burned.
Stressed-out piston rings due to a change in the engine’s power output can be the source of the oil leak. Alternatively, it could also be due to a worn-out cylinder wall or valve seal.
Try to observe when the blue exhaust happens. If it occurs during acceleration, it could be due to the piston rings. On the other hand, if it is present while you are slowing down, it probably has something to do with the valve guide seals.
Gray
Another color to watch out for is a gray color. Usually, the gray color is due to a head gasket leak, crack in the cylinder head, or engine blocks that are broken. When there’s a gasket leak, the coolant of the engine is what contaminates the gas chamber and burns with the fuel.
With a leaking coolant, the engine cannot be efficiently cooled down, which can result in a car engine that overheats easily. This has to be dealt with immediately to ensure your safety.
Black
Black can be a scarier color compared to gray because it may seem that something is really burning. However, the gray color is more dangerous than this one. Black color may signify that the air filter is clogged, there’s an impacted manifold, or a broken fuel injection system. The black color means that there is more fuel burned than it should. This will result in wasted fuel and lower gas mileage.
White
White is usually the safest of all the colors to see. It is usually observed during cold days and is caused by vapor. Once your car heats up, it will eventually disappear too. However, if it doesn’t then there could be a problem with the fuel pump injection or a coolant leak.
